    Site Update

For the 432nd time in the last 10 years, I’ve decided that I don’t need to have separate websites for my photography, freelance development work, and personal blog.

I’d always thought I should keep work and personal stuff well separated, now that I’m older and wiser, I realise that I should keep it together as they’re both very much connected.

I’ve been really enjoying the work of photographer Jeremy Cowart of late, you should check it out, and one thing that he does that I’m a fan of is not only share his work, but also share things going on in his life and with his family, you can often see how the two influence each other.

So what does that mean for the website here?

Expect to see a whole load of different focal points, I work in a few different spaces, I’m also involved in the administration of a football club, I love tech stuff, I play video games, I’m a Dad, I’m a husband, there’s no end to the sort of stuff I can publish here!

Looking forward to getting home to actually enjoy the remains of the long weekend, been away at a conference the last few days.

I have a love/hate relationship with building websites. I love building websites for other people, especially when they know what they want. When it comes to building one for myself, ugh, it’s the worst.

After getting my remote pilots license, I figured I better get something together to show that I’m available for hire, the sort of work I do, and some examples of what I’ve done already, so of course, I’m building a website for myself.

In reality, it should be pretty easy to put it together, but of course, it’s not.

When it comes to making decisions as to what element to put where, what to include, what to leave out, and all the other sorts of questions a web designer/developer would ask to get them moving on a project, I just cannot settle on any answers.

    So frustrating!

Not 100% sure how to progress, I guess I’m probably best off throwing something/anything on the website and then refining it a little later on…it doesn’t need to be perfect at launch!

I passed all the tests for my Remote Pilots License, just waiting on CASA to issue the actual license and it’ll all be official.

I should probably update my LinkedIn profile to add the license in, as well as putting the details on all my business operations stuff, might be helpful for booking more drone work in the future.

Starting my VLoS Certificate course today for my drone license, got a feeling it’s going to be quite tough!

Over the weekend, we had our Club Presentation Day, somehow I was voted Club Person of The Year, which was quite surprising and also very awesome. It’s nice to be recognised for all the work I’ve been putting in.

I’m on a mission to get my sh!t back together, i.e. get back in shape, so I’ve been working through re-setting up my account on Exist.io, getting the various QS logging apps on my iPhone up to date, and last but not least, sorting out a food logging app.

Here’s a quick, opinionated, overview of 3 apps that I’ve tested in the last 24 hours. The way Iโ€™m judging them is by ease of food input, integration with Apple Health, integration with a couple of โ€œsmartโ€ health devices that I already own.

Lose It - An on-boarding issue prevented me from being able to use it. Apparently I had setup an account with them before, and I can’t recall the password, but it doesn’t let me try to reset it, and there’s no way to bypass it during on-boarding process on my iPhone. The other thing that irks me is that the height and weight is in imperial during the on-boarding, and doesn’t ask me if it’s like to change it.

Lifesum - Simple on-boarding process, collects your age, height, and weight, allows changing units to metric, and asks you how much you want to lose/gain, before presenting you with some dieting options, some free, some paid. Basic logging is quick and easy, it also includes the macros, which is important if you’re following a particular diet. Disappointingly, you canโ€™t import recipes from a URL or another app, which sucks, and you also canโ€™t log your foods via your account on their website, which also sucks, and makes me not want to use it.

MyFitnessPal - On-boarding was simple, caveat - Iโ€™ve done it before. Metrics can be changed easily to kilograms and centimetres, it’s easy to choose between calories and kilojoules. My favourite feature is that you can easily import recipes from URLs, you can also log your foods via your account on their website, so you’re not stuck in a mobile-only place.

At this point, Iโ€™ll be sticking with MyFitnessPal due to the ease of entry mainly. Itโ€™s not the prettiest app, Lifesum wins that category, but functionality wise MFP has everything I want / need in it, now I just have to keep using it.
